FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

STARLINE Cured In Place Lining - NATURAL GAS & PRESSURE PIPELINES

+ What is the longevity of the pipe once it has been lined?
Extensive industry testing by NYSEARCH, PHMSA, Cornell University, Batelle Labs, and ASTM show that Cured-in-Place Lined pipe extends the useful life by over 100 years.

+ What are the ideal site selections for CIPL?

  • Urban Centers, areas that cannot tolerate extended disruption or would require expensive restoration

  • Crossings including bridges, highways, railroads and rivers often have pipelines that run across the bridges. Traditional repair costs are extremely high and these repairs are often quite dangerous. CIPL is an ideal solution as repairs are done without the need to remove the pipeline.

  • Large diameter pipe where throughput cannot be reduced

  • Areas of high concern – schools, churches, hospitals and environmentally sensitive or historic areas

  • In areas where replacement cost is a concern, lining can save 50% of the costs associated with traditional dig & replace methods

+Outside of gas distribution pipes typically found in local distribution companies, what other types of pipelines can be renewed using this trenchless technique?

  • CIPL pipeline renewal technique is particularly well-suited and beneficial for use in mid-stream and upstream pipeline sector applications to eliminate inadvertent emission of unodorized natural gas releases due to leaks and resultant GHG issues, while simultaneously improving pipeline flow capacity.

+ What are the pressure ratings?

  • PPM has different liners capable of installation in high pressure mains up to MAOP of 99PSI, 180PSI, 250 PSI (soon 450PSI)

+ What diameter/size pipes can be lined ?

  • Our CIPL/UV process renews existing metallic pipelines (e.g. cast iron and steel) with diameters from 1″ service lines to 42″ transmission mains

+ What are the distances that can be lined?

  • One way distances up to 2,000 feet with two pits overlapping

+ Can the pipe be worked on after it has been rehabilitated?

  • Yes! Repairs to a lined pipe should be made the same way as an unlined pipe. Utilities do not need to repair the liner—the section of lined pipe can be repaired using traditional methods.

+ Can it hold pressure even if host pipe breaks or cracks?

  • Tests have shown that lined pipe can maintain pressure through 100 years of freeze/thaw cycles, heavy truck traffic, and even in worst case scenarios, where an undermine event (such as an excavation & backfill) causes dis-bonding, lined pipe is able to maintain pressure.

+ What ASTM Standards does the technology meet?

  • All lining materials meet ASTM F2207-02 and ASTM F2207-06 requirements

+ Can a line with standpipes, gaps, or services be lined?

  • Yes! Standpipes can be removed robotically, and a carbon fiber structural reinforcement sleeve (SRS) installed over any gaps. The liner can then be installed through the SRS. Any services can be identified and reinstated robotically after the lining process is complete.

 + What are the limitations?

  • Projects should be completed when air temperatures are above freezing

  • Lining relies on host pipe for structure

  • Line must be down for (1) night (unless UV Cured)
